This is called the Puff Adder, commonly known as "Kifutu", one of the most venomous and dangerous snakes found in Tanzania, especially in the Serengeti National Park.
They are most commonly found in areas like Seronera, Ndutu, and along the Grumeti River.
This creature is very calm and extremely shy.
The Puff Adder is said to be the fastest-striking snake in the world — it can strike in just 0.25 seconds, meaning it can attack in a quarter of a second.
It strikes faster than even a hippopotamus.
Despite this, it’s not fast-moving — it's short and moves slowly. When it senses danger, it puffs up and breathes loudly, which is why it's called “kifutu” (meaning one who puffs).
It is considered one of the leading causes of snakebite deaths in Africa, mainly due to its habit of camouflaging on the ground. Because of its appearance, it blends into its surroundings, and if you step on it unknowingly — that’s it. It strikes with lightning speed.
Have you ever encountered a Puff Adder?
